subject biography:
Born in 1909 at Oraniembaum. In 1925 begins the study of
Constructivist Architecture while in 1934 his interests shifts to
Classical Architecture. At a very young age he
receives his first prize
with the building project that houses The Book House in
Moscow. His activities intensify during the reconstruction after World
War II: projects in Stalingrad, Sophia, Moscow and surroundings.
During the Stalin years, he takes part on the construction of the
industrial neighborhoods and oversees above all the workers' housing
project. In 1961 continues his studies: presents his PhD
thesis and publishes a book about
harmony in Architecture. He is also
a witness for the constructions of the krusciove: buildings
named after the homonymous president, that
became known in Russia for
their invisibility. Afanasiev busies himself also with Pedagogical
Studies and still to this day receives visits from his students.
