translation:
I should say that after the war I have lived the most beautiful four
or five years of my life, because finally one could go abroad.
Before the war only the ballet dancers and the singers form the Bolshoy
could travel abroad. Suddenly I could go outside the frontiers.
Oh! I couldn't even dream of finding myself abroad, especially
me, since I had parents who were enemies of the people. In the
beginning I have found myself in the socialist countries to follow my two
films. Then, with Nights over Belgrade I was invited
over to Yugoslavia, and at Belgrade I had a "Platonic story" with Tito.
He couldn't marry me because, after the war, Yugoslavia had assumed a
hostile position in relation to our country. And Tito would tell me:
" I can't marry her, but I invoke her to come to live in Yugoslavia".
He was a Croat, he wanted me to visit Zagreb, invited me to Rome, but I
would say I prefered Venice , and then he would say: Zagreb is also
beautiful. And then he would promise me a film studio. He would say:
" We will find a great actress who in the beginining will be able to do
the voice-overs until you'll learn our language. But I didn't want it...
because I love my country ... I wouldn't want it ... wouldn't want it. |
